A behind-the-scenes look at the virtual production shoot for the Every Time music video. Shot at Fuse Technical Group's headquarters in Glendale, California, three worlds were created in Unreal Engine to capture the mythological narrative. 


DIRECTOR'S NOTES


“The interplay between technology and the creative arts will eventually result in completely new forms of expression and media. This innovation will come from people who are able to link beauty to engineering, humanity to technology, and poetry to processors.”


THE CAMERA – Shooting large format on the ARRI Alexa Mini LF gave our scenes emotional and technical layers of depth. Not only did the camera separate our characters from their world, it broadened the possibilities when it came to the technical limitations of the LED volume.


THE LENSES – Our goal was to enhance the magical realism of the 

character's reality. We chose to embrace the imperfections that come with vintage glass as a window into their world. Rehoused Canon Type SK Primes from the 1960s gave us that otherworldly glow. Vintage coatings delivered a unique painterly look.


TECHNICAL APPROACH – Practical film light shapes the physical reality to match the virtual world. Hard light was essential to extend broken sunbeams from the cavern above the sea grotto scene. We kept the wall at a subtle ambient level, used primarily for its image, to avoid increased red in skin tones.


LIMITATIONS & POSSIBILITIES – Quick pans & camera moves decrease the resolution of the frustum. In the volume, there is an element of spatial limitation. Aside from that, anything is possible. The future involves mixed reality studios where practical lighting is integrated with light sources in Unreal Engine, seamlessly blending the set.
